For the next month I will be joining SITS (The Secret Is In The Sauce) in 31 Days To Build a Better Blog (#31DBBB) in conjunction with ProBlogger Each day is a new task to post to help me focus and make this a better blog. I love the idea of improving all of the time, so this task is right up my alley.
Day 4: Analyze a Top Blog in Your Niche
Question 1: Which of the areas discussed in today’s task are you most interested in studying about your niche, and why? (These are content, reader engagement, design monetization, traffic & SEO)
I have been keeping many of the blogs in my niche in my RSS feed to study them further. I am especially curious about those that are quite successful. I look at their comments to see what people are saying which helps to find out how the readers are engaging with the blog author. A lot of times I see the same people commenting, which means that author as a following. This increases their traffic, which is another thing I study other blogs for. Readers are also more likely to follow you on Twitter and retweet you about your newest post on your blog. My next focus will be studying them for how their SEO is doing.
Question 2: What’s one thing you could do to improve your blog after studying the top blogs in your niche?
I’m still a bit new in trying to become a successful blogger, but I’m finding that the more you interact with other bloggers the more likely they are to interact with you. Right now my focus is finding thoughtful blogs and leave comments there often. I feel this will bring more traffic. I’m at the beginning stages of SEO, so I feel like that is a huge portion of what I need to learn.

I did a bunch of these tasks back when he first posted them on Problogger, and it was a lot of fun! I still have the emails and should probably go back through them again.
Good luck!

if you use google analytics and you want to track how useful your commenting is, you can add /?utm_campaign=comments after your .com in the url box when you leave a comment and then in google analytics go to traffic sources > campaigns and see how good the hits coming from comments are. i’ve seen EXTREMELY good results. the average person who clicks over to my site from a comment stays for almost 20 minutes.

Carrie,
Thank you so much for that information. That is extremely useful. I love the 31DBBB I’m learning so much already.
It can be very overwhelming. Sometimes I feel like if I do all these other steps I’ll never get the post up! I’m loving the challenge because it gives me the push I need to finally learn how to these things and incorporate them into my blogging. BTW, I love the hangers on your site!
